From Documentation to Wisdom: Why Using AI Is Just the Next Step in the Human Journey

We’ve always built tools to help us capture and understand knowledge. Today’s AI is no different—it’s a tool to help us turn information into wisdom. Here’s why that matters.

We didn’t always know how to or have a system to write things down. There was a time when knowledge, wisdom, and stories were told by memory, passed from one person to the next around a fire. Then came one evolution of language after the next. We learned to document our experiences, thoughts, questions, and discoveries. From clay tablets to digital keyboards, the goal remained the same: to preserve what we’ve experienced as knowledge and turn it into wisdom for tomorrow. For the sake or survival. For the sake of growth.

Later, we refined the process. We created systems to help us write better—style guides, grammar books, rubrics, dictionaries, and spell checkers. We built tools that made it easier to communicate clearly, consistently, and creatively. Tools like Microsoft Word, Grammarly, and Hemingway didn’t make us lazy writers; they helped us write more confidently and express ourselves more clearly so that others could better utilize the knowledge.

Now we have AI.

And like before with past evolutions in our language and tools, the moment things like ChatGPT showed up, the fear hit hard. “Isn’t this cheating?” “Won’t this make people lazy?” “Isn’t this dangerous?”

But the truth is this: AI is just another tool in a long line of tools we’ve built to help us make sense of the world. It’s not the enemy of creativity or originality. It’s a mirror, a sounding board, a collaborative assistant. It’s here to help us use the knowledge we’ve collected—not just hoard it.

Because we’re not in the information age anymore. We’re in the application age.

We’ve documented so much. We’ve built endless libraries, databases, websites, and archives of information. The question now isn’t, “Do we know enough?” It’s, “How are we using what we know?” Are we turning information into wisdom? Are we creating good with the knowledge we’ve accumulated?

That’s why tools like ChatGPT aren’t bad—they’re necessary. Just like spellcheck. Just like a map. Just like a mentor. And how we use them? That’s where the real meaning lies.

So ask yourself this: what narrative am I telling surrounding AI, ChatGPT, and other similar tools?

Are fear and obligation at the root of my thoughts and beliefs regarding, or is hope and opportunity?

How this ties into the work I do…

When I build websites, I’m not just helping businesses put information online. I’m helping them create a clear, purposeful online presence that turns information into connection, and connection into action. Your website isn’t just a place to store your knowledge—it’s a way to guide others with it.

And if we can use tools like AI to help clarify that journey? Even better. Because using the right tools isn’t cheating—it’s wise.

If this resonates with you, let’s have a relaxed conversation about where you are, where you’re headed, and whether partnering with me might be the right next step.
